Launching a collectible on Kickstarter? Here are the top 5 things we tell every first-time creator before they start tooling.
1. Get DFM (Design for Manufacturing) Early
The biggest mistake is finalizing your design before consulting a manufacturer. A DFM review typically saves 15-25% in tooling costs by:
- Optimizing part splitting for simpler molds
- Adjusting wall thickness to prevent warping
- Adding draft angles for clean ejection
- Consolidating parts to reduce mold count
Send us your 3D files at the concept stage — we’ll review them free of charge before you commit to final design.
2. Budget for Sample Rounds
Plan for 2-3 sample rounds minimum:
- T1 (First Shot): Verify fit, function, aesthetics
- T2 (Color Sample): Approve paint and finishes
- T3 (Pre-Production): Final validation before mass production
Budget: $500-1,500 per sample round (including shipping). This is money well spent.
3. Understand Your Timeline
Typical timeline from file to backer delivery:
- Tooling: 4-6 weeks
- Samples: 2-3 rounds (3-4 weeks each including shipping)
- Production: 4-6 weeks
- Sea Freight: 3-5 weeks (China → US/Europe)
- Fulfillment: 1-2 weeks
Total: 16-22 weeks minimum. Plan your campaign end-date accordingly.
4. MOQ ≠ Minimum Viable Order
500 pieces is our standard minimum for PVC figures, but:
- First orders build the relationship
- 80% of our clients re-order within 6 months
- Re-orders of 2,000+ pieces qualify for mold refunds
- Scalable pricing: 500/1000/3000/5000+ tiers
Don’t over-order on your first run. Prove the concept, then scale.
5. Communicate with Your Factory
The best partnerships are built on transparency:
- Share your campaign timeline early
- Be honest about production budget
- Ask for progress photos during production
- Visit the factory if possible (we welcome client visits)
